"Integral Inherently Safe Light Water Reactor (I2S-LWR) Concept"

("Razvoj integralnog lakovodnog reaktora s inherentnim sigurnosnim karakteristikama")

Abstract:

EN: The presentation will introduce the Integral Inherently Safe Light Water Reactor (I2S-LWR) concept. The project aims to develop a novel concept of a PWR of 1,000 MWe power level, with competitive economics and with enhanced safety features (as compared to the current Generation III+ reactors), based on considering the lessons learnt from the Fukushima Dai-ichi accident. This new concept is based on the integral primary circuit configuration, a new type of the fuel/cladding system, and a novel steam generation system. These new elements, in synergy, enable a compact design with enhanced safety. Team members on this U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) supported project led by the Georgia Institute of Technology include eight U.S. and international academic institutions, Idaho National Laboratory, Westinghouse, electric utility, with expected participation of the University of Zagreb, Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing.

HR: Predavanje ce predstaviti projekt razvoja integralnog lakovodnog reaktora s inherentnim sigurnosnim karakteristikama, tzv. Itegral Inherently Safe Light Water Reactor (I2S-LWR). Cilj projekta je razvoj koncepta lakovodnog tlacnog reaktora snage 1,000 MWe s poboljsanim sigurnosnim karakteristikama u odnosu na danasnje reaktore Generacije III+, uzimajuci u obzir iskustva proizasla iz Fukushima Dai-ichi akcidenta, te s kompetitivnim ekonomskim karakteristikama. Ovaj novi koncept je baziran na integralnoj konfiguraciji reaktorske posude, novom tipu nuklearnog goriva, te novom sustavu za generiranje pare, koji zajedno sinergijski omogucavaju kompaktan dizajn s poboljsanom sigirnoscu. Na ovom projektu americkog ministarstva energetike (U.S. DOE) kojeg vodi Georgia Institute of Technology ucestvuje osam americkih i medjunarodnih akademskih institucija, INL nacionalni laboratorij, kompanija Westinghouse, elektroprivredna organizacija, uz ocekivano ucesce Fakulteta za elektroniku i racunarstvo Sveucilista u Zagrebu.

Lecturer: Prof. dr. Bojan Petrović, Georgia Institute of Technology, USA

Bojan Petrovic joined Georgia Tech in 2007 as a Professor. Prior to that he acquired industrial experience as a Fellow Scientist in Westinghouse Science and Technology where his primary responsibility was as the project Deputy Director on the development of the advanced, modular IRIS reactor. Dr. Petrovic's current research focuses on advanced reactor design, nuclear fuel cycle and waste management, and related modeling and simulation methods.

Novel reactor designs and advanced fuel cycles pose new challenges and require improved, more accurate methods of modeling and simulations. Dr. Petrovic's interest is in developing approaches for using Monte Carlo and hybrid deterministic-Monte Carlo methods (for eigenvalue as well as shielding applications) in a way that will be practical and relevant for analysis of complex nuclear systems.

Dr. Petrovic has a strong interest in interdisciplinary areas, and his research projects have included collaboration related to industrial and medical applications of nuclear technology. His recent research in computational medical physics focuses on proton therapy. His research has been sponsored by the Department of Energy, industry and utilities.
